Love it? Lose it?

Countless times I’ve looked through my closet, flipped through every single piece of clothing I own, and stomped out of my room, defeated, exclaiming ‘I have nothing to wear!’ Of course, there are things that I could wear, but the sweater I reached for is so out dated, and I can’t remember if skinny jeans are in right now – or whether it even matters.

If you can relate at all, it’s time for a closet over-haul. Fashion faux pas these days work at lightning speed – only true Superwomen can keep up with what’s in style this second and what isn’t. And with the current economic downturn now is not really the time to go on a spree and flip your closet. Instead, let’s divide and conquer, find the faux pas hiding in your closet, and re-work your clothes so they can see the light of day once again. Clear some space on your floor, to donate, keep, and store.

Faux Pas #1: The Nostalgia Trap
scrunchies
A large number of fashion faux pas result from a nostalgic act of pack-ratting possessions from decades past – I mean, admit it, a great number of us still actually owned a scrunchies when the Sex and the City episode aired that caused a record-number of pouffy, velvet hair elastics to be thrown in the trash for good. And I don’t care who knows it, but I still have a faded Kurt Cobain concert t-shirt – and I don’t think I will be throwing it away any time soon. But the lesson here is that if you really can’t part with your keepsakes, for cripes-sake keep them in a neatly labeled storage container – not proudly on your back.

Once these items are placed out of site, scan your closet. The next things to pull out are all of the clothes that – now be honest – don’t fit properly. This brings us to…

Faux Pas #2: The Reality Blinder
whiskered-jeans
Whiskered jeans are not flattering…

Forget the saying ‘ignorance is bliss’ – plain ignoring reality is never a good idea when picking your outfit.

Skinny jeans that are too tight, shirts that are boxy, the dress you are saving for the day you fit into it again, the whole lot – if you realize that the clothes in your closet really don’t work on you, send them to charity – life is too short to spend your days in uncomfortable jeans. Wardrobes need not be about quantity – a small closet stocked with the right pieces can be mixed with multiple items for a new life.

Now marvel at your newly spacious closet.

Gladiator Sandal
gladiator-sandal
I’m lusting over these Steve Madden Maddiee Sandals

The ever-popular gladiator sandal continues to be all over the runways – so hold on to them. Look to Ann Demeulemeester’s Spring 2009 collection for inspiration.

Statement Necklace
statement-necklace
I love this  necklaces.

Statement necklaces are fortifying their stronghold on necklines. So the jewelery from the past two seasons is still relevant. Look to Dries Van Noten for inspiration, and consolation that while it may look too large in the store, it can elevate an otherwise simple look.

Black & White
black-and-white

The color palette of black, white, and nudes – seen on the runways of Chanel, Ann Demeulemeester, and Dries Van Noten – will transition from fall into spring (perhaps a reflection of the sombre economic mood these days? Or perhaps I’m reading into it).

Chanel’s latest collection retains the air of last season’s Mad Men craze. If you look in your closet and see that you already own a pair of black trousers or a knee-length pencil skirt, consider purchasing a bow-tie top, and you’ve just created two new stylish looks.

What to do if you spent all your savings on last season’s super saturated garb? Shelve it until the recession worries are over, or pair bright accessories sparingly with neutrals. The silver lining is that in a time when money is tight, fashion trends are moving forward in a gradual progression, rather than making a complete departure from seasons past – so, with a few small tweaks it is possible to stay in fashion and stay on budget.

PS: Coming up next, ‘how to re-organize your closet?’. Stay tune ;)

Advertise Your Ass

ASSVERTISING: The practice of wearing pants with a company’s name, logo, mission statement, or other agenda strategically sewn across your rear end. May cause frequent stares of admiration, disbelief, and disgust.

1215assvertising-final_fa.jpg

I think it’s safe to say that Juicy Couture started this phenomenon, creating booty billboards everywhere from Los Angeles to Miami and Malaysia…and the assvertising phenomenon just grew from there. First bums were Juicy, then they were Delicious, Bootylicious, and eventually evolved into PINK, Princess, Go Michigan!, you name it. Clearly, they’re meant to be looked at, right? I mean, can men really be blamed for gawking when you’ve got the word “Juicy” scrawled across your backside? And do we care if they do look? When you buy a pair of these pants, aren’t you entering into an unspoken contract that permits all living, breathing males with 20/20 vision to stare at your derriere? Why else would you be wearing them?

What do you guys think about letting your tush serve as a free billboard? Is assvertising a cute concept, or totally uncool? Do you own any assvertisements? Where do you wear them? Do you get stares? And do you mind?

V-Day Outfit

You have two days until Valentine’s Day, and you still don’t know what to wear for your date? Never fear, because my fashion advice is here! LOL! But before you choose an outfit, you must consider four things:

1. Where you are going
2. What you will be doing
3. The weather
4. Your comfort

Considering these things is vitally important because being improperly dressed is embarrassing. You do not want to show up to a nice candle-lit dinner in Aeropostale sweats and a pair of old Nikes.
Checking the weather is important, especially with the weather we have been having lately. You want to make sure you are comfortable and confident with the outfit you choose, because it might be easy for your date to be able to tell that you are uncomfortable, especially when you make that “special face” when your shirt starts to feel as if you have on itching powder.

What you are wearing is one of the first things your date will notice, so I would advise you to make your outfit decisions wisely.

How to Measure for a Bra

Victoria_Secret

Correctly measure yourself for a bra – An astounding 85% of Women are wearing the wrong bra size!! (I might be one of them. LOL!). Learn how to correctly measure yourself for a bra using these simple techniques.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes or less

What You Need:

  • measuring tape
  • notepad
  • pencil or pen

Here’s How:

  1. Find out your chest size. Run a measuring tape directly underneath your breasts, all the way around your back and ribcage. Write down your measurements. Now, add 5 inches and that’s your chest size!
  2. Find out your cup measurements. Run the measuring tape along your breasts at their fullest point (usually the middle) and write down your measurements.
  3. Note the difference between your cup measurements and your chest measurements (your cup measurements will be larger).
  4. Based on the number that represents the difference between your measurements, you will find you true cup size. Use the following guide to determine:
  5. up to 1/2 inch = AA
    1/2 to 1 inch = A
    1 inch to 2 inches = B
    2 to 3 inches = C
    3 to 4 inches = D
    4 to 5 inches = DD/E and so on…

Tips:

  1. Bras are usually sold with even number chest sizes. So, if your chest measurement is an odd number, just buy the next size up.

Groovy Moovy

Style is important. You can tell a lot by the way someone dresses, like how they feel about themselves, view themselves, and how much confidence they have in themselves.Find a look, a style, a trademark. Show your personality through the way you dress, instead of just putting on any old thing. You have standards for the food you eat, the guys you date, and the things you do, so why not have standards for the way you dress? Start with this: If it makes you feel and look good, wear it!

Do you have a favorite outfit? One that you wear when nothing else feels good or looks right?

Find out what’s so special about it. Whatever the reasons are, fill your closet with clothes that make you feel good for the same reason.

Even if you aren’t picture perfect, the way you dress can really improve your whole “look.”

1. If you don’t wear a size six, don’t worry! Who wants to be just average anyway? Be proud of your size! Wear a size two? Excellent! Wear a size twelve? Awesome!

2. Now learn how to dress for your body. You’re the only one who knows what you’re
comfortable in so be the judge. Think about this: Brilliant eyes? Wear a color that complements them. If you love your legs, stock up on mini skirts and short shorts. If you have great arms, invest in a couple cute tanks. Have noteworthy abs? Don’t be afraid to wear a belly-baring top! Proud of your chest? Wear a flattering camisole or halter.

3. When you look in a mirror try this little trick: Every time you look, think of one positive thing about your appearance. It can be anything, as long as it’s positive. The hard part? For any negative thoughts about yourself, you must think of two great things! This takes a little will power your part!

4. Develop a style like no one else, but make sure it’s “you”. Don’t just wear one designer or style of clothing exclusively. Mix and match to your own liking. Vintage and prep. Athletic and trendy. Whatever you like! So what if people talk about it. You’re you and you will be forever!

5. Don’t dress like a nobody. Stand out a little. Don’t ever settle for ordinary! You’re chic. You’re fabulous. You’re you! There is no one else in this world as fabulous as you are in your own ways. So dress with lots and lots of personality!
Good luck for developing a style that you’re proud of!

First Day of Semester Fashion

newschool

When new semester starts, it always means a time for renewal in teen fashion.

The first day of semester is the first appearance you have after three whole weeks – make it a good one, because first impressions matter.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your big debut ensembles:

  • Keep things simple and classic, nothing in-your-face or over the top.
  • It’s okay to be a little trendy, but you have to adapt the trends to your personal style, or you’ll end up looking like a major trend-chaser.
  • Put on the confidence! If you don’t have it, fake it. When you not doubting yourself, no one else will doubt you or your clothing choices.

Create the Outfit
The idea behind a great first-day-of-semester is a killer ensemble. Just make sure you can back up your outfit and will keep your dressing pattern consistent – don’t wear an ultra trendy, right-off-the-runway look and then turn around and wear simple jeans & a tee combo the rest of the year.

Look good, but nothing too dressy or attention-grabbing (only exception is if that’s the look you’re going for the whole academic year!).

Here are several looks to consider for a first day style:

  • Chic & understated. Black tee with dark denim hipsters, black boots, low-slung black belt, plus an oversized eye-catching necklace in turquoise, silver, or coral. Tres chic!
  • One part western, one part sophisticated. Distressed boot cut jeans, fitted striped oxford (stay away from plaid to avoid a complete cowgirl look), fringed belt, and pointy-toe boots. Remember to coordinate shoes and belt!
  • Athletic-inspired. Although a too-cute track suit is absolutely perfect for any other school day, it’s just too casual. Instead, wear a sleek, colorful hoodie in terry or velour with a sharp denim mini, fitted tank, and bright new sneaks.
  • Updated Gypsy. Change the vibe of serious chino trousers (low-rise, a little baggy, but still chic) with a hippie-esque embroidered peasant top. Throw on a few beaded bracelets and add a pair of semi-dressy kitten-heeled sandals.

Add the accessories
Accessories definitely make or break the clothing.  The perfect shoe & belt combination, plus jewelry is required for any great look. Here are five things that you need to fully accessorize this academic year:

1. Fringe suede belt. Adds a rustic appeal to hipsters and a sleek tee.

2. Turquoise. There’s nothing better than a great turquoise necklace or cuff with black – such a clean, chic combination!

3. Chandelier earrings. So elegant, yet so easy to pull off! These gorgeous jewels look just as great with an evening gown as they do with a feminine top and denim.

4. Trendy sneaks. Required both for those stylishly sporty and those just plain stylish. A great pair of sneaks can take you anywhere.

5. Boots. Whether you choose a sleek black or distressed brown leather style, the look will definitely be hot!

The rest of the week
Okay, so you get the first day over with while wearing a completely fabulous outfit but now you have the rest of the week to worry about!

Make a point that you don’t get all dressy and cute the first day, and then every other day wear trainers and track pants.

I suggest that the whole week is planned out in outfits.  That way you can focus on what is academic year really about – homework and important stuff (don’t forget guys, friends, socializing).

Dressing = Art

Your wardrobe is a form of self-expression and allows you to be creative every day.

It should reflect your personality, say something about who you are as a person and your values.

If you choose to believe that ‘clothes are not important’ you are losing out – both creatively and also in taking charge of the way you are percieved by others.

You choose which clothes to put on your back, even if you choose to be ‘invisible’ it’s still a choice.

Humans have always appreciated art (think cave paintings), we appreciate beauty, this is in our DNA. Why not take advantage of the daily opportunity of dressing to choose to make yourself a vision of beauty, and make the world a more beautiful place for us all to live in?

Is this a mission you’re willing to accept?
